Green, Lean and Clean

The wind propelled dynamic lines and efficient naval architecture of the SY200 Superyacht represents an exciting new wave of eco vessels

When designer Philippe Briand unveiled the latest sailing yacht concept to come from his London-based design studio, it won headlines for its performance and style. At 200-feet (60 metres), the SY200 combined a traditional sailing rig, the 490 GT sloop, to ensure it could potentially outperform the other sailing yachts already on the water. The SY200 - unlike some sailing Superyacht - is an authentic sailing yacht in all aspects, designed with a similar development approach to that used in smaller, high-performance racing yachts. Philippe Briand’s award-winning design pedigree is very much in evidence throughout the SY200, from the clean, dynamic lines and outstandingly efficient naval architecture that ensures a minimum speed of over 20 knots.

Representing a striking and exciting new wave of green superyachts, the wind propelled SY200’s remarkable hydrodynamic efficiency means more power could be harnessed through its underwater turbines to charge batteries on board. Theoretically, if 50% of the energy is captured by the turbines, it would provide power equivalent to that of a 500kW generator, while maintaining a speed of around 15 knots.

A sloop sailing rig was chosen by Philippe Briand to complement the contemporary hull with its slightly inverted bow. With its foremast towering 274-feet (83.5 meters) above the waterline, the SY200’s upwind sail area is 21,528 sqft (2,000 sqm), while its downwind sail area is more than 32, 292 sqft (3,000 sqm). Briand’s designs have been careful to ensure well-balanced proportions deliver a sleek overall aesthetic with a length at the waterline of 197-feet (60 meter) and a maximum beam of 34 ½ feet (10.5 meters).

The SY200 boats two spacious decks for ample guest space, including a spectacular glass coach roof on a completely flush deck. The exterior’s star attraction is the owner’s aft steering station, which is a natural gathering point for friends and family. Up to 14 guests can experience the uniquely thrilling sensation of movement created by harnessing the natural power of the wind, be it when crushing or racing. Minimalistic, uncluttered decks have a distinctly contemporary look and allow stunning vistas of the surroundings whilst an enormous 16-seat dining table in the cockpit, protected from the sun by the long hardtop.

The engine room is located a distance from the guest area, to reduce noise and allow easier access to the engine from crew quarters. A large terrace features a concealed Jacuzzi and direct access to the water. Final interior layouts can be tailored to an owner’s desires and include accommodation for up to 12 crew.

The SY200 At a Glance [BOX OUT]

• In optimum wind conditions, the equivalent power harnessed by the SY200’s sails is calculated to be 2,000kW

•  The SY200 is designed to capture kinetic energy through the movement of underwater turbines while sailing

•  When sail8mg at 15 knots, the yacht will generate 500kW (200kW at 12 knots), sufficient to meet onboard power demands of the hotel and manoeuvring systems

•  Creating a yacht that discharges zero emissions was Philippe Briand’s motivation for designing the SY200

•  Energy stored in the 22-ton onboard battery bank allows the yacht to be silently powered while at anchor

•  With the main living deck on one level, 80% of the yacht’s length is protected by a glass coach roof and hardtop with an immense skylight providing unobstructed view

•  A radical shake-up of interior features allows more space and quietude for four guest cabins and the owner’s suite (which has direct, private access to the sea).

•  Initial concepts of the yacht’s decor are based on the application of pure, raw materials.

The SY200 has been designed to be under 500 gross tons, which minimises its weight and cost of maintenance.
